Marit’s been a well-known face at Tandarts Jordaan for many years. She worked here as a dental assistant alongside her studies in dentistry, and when she graduated she continued her career with us.
Were you happy to go to the dentist when you were young?
I loved going to the dentist. I went along to watch whenever my parents had a treatment. I was really curious about all the materials and the parts that were needed for a root canal for instance, fantastic – I knew I wanted to do that when I grew up!
Do you ever (or have you in the past) had dental problems?
Not as yet, but I do have 6 wisdom teeth, which are all still in place at the moment!
Why did you actually decide to study dentistry?
From a young age I was always fascinated by my uncle’s practice, he’s a dentist. When I was a little girl I also really liked fiddly tasks: untangling necklaces and the like. I enjoyed solving problems and coming up with creative ways to do so. For me, the combination of helping people, technical and solutions-oriented work seemed like a dream job!
What moments have stayed with you?
I had a patient who, after various treatments which needed anaesthetic, dared to come back to the dentist for time. I have built up trust with him which means I’ve since been able to treat the whole front and carry out periodical checks with no problems. The gentlemen was genuinely grateful; to me, that’s really special.
Another patient, comes to mind who was so pleased with the cosmetic work on her teeth she burst into tears when she saw the results!
And there are kids who come running in to give me a cuddle, so sweet!
What plans do you have for your future within dentistry?
I want to continue developing and improving; the areas I find most interesting are endodontics(root canal treatments), aesthetics, surgery, and crown and bridge work. In addition to my work as a dentist I’m able to regularly take multi-day training courses. In the last few years I’ve taken lots in the area of restorative dentistry and aesthetic cases. You often see cases where a short-term solution has been adopted. If the origin of the problem isn’t dealt with though you see the same problems recurring multiple times. That’s not just annoying for patients but expensive too. Restorative dentistry gives me extra satisfaction because when you deal with larger, underlying problems, you can really make a difference for people, now and in the future.
Why do you feel people should choose to come to Tandarts Jordaan?
Tandarts Jordaan is a great practice, where the patient really is central to the work. Every practitioner is a professional and together we strive for perfection. We have all possible materials and equipment on-site which means we can handle almost any kind of treatment right here at the practice.
